MAIN POINT: Sanctification is not based on man-made rules.
-Avoid mystical, legalistic, and asceticism
Who they are: In response to religious bullies, the "no ones"
What they are: trying to do sanctification on others from their perspective and on their terms.
Mysticism, v. 18
Legalistic, v. 16,22
Legalistic = human traditionalism, man-made
cf. Mark 7:1-15, the "tradition of the elders"
Asceticism, v. 21-22
English definition is not the same as the Greek word used here. This Greek work simply means "humility". Wrongful humility here is self-depriving of all indulgences imposed by an external source in an ungodly way.
v. 22b - Humility wrongly derived
v. 23 - Humility wrongly directly
This required people to abstain from things that God gave for us. This condemns things that God says are good in the proper context. This does not work
v. 19 - The ultimate problem with the religious bullies is that they area not hold fast to the "Head", aka Christ.
v. 17 -
The SHADOW of sanctification is man-made, man-derived rules
The SUBSTANCE of sanctification is Christ and His rules
AVOID man-made rules of what sanctification is
AVOID the extreme of thinking there are no rules
Instead, discern the difference between man's rules and Christ's rules.
Follow Christ's rules.
